How to Update Wii SD R4 Card

Nintendo Wii uses SD R4 Card technology to help players transfer saved games, photos and other data to a secondary storage unit. The SD R4 Cards can upload and download information from one system to the next, making it easy to share multimedia between consoles. Most SD R4 Cards are compatible with the Wii, and some are even optimized for it (you'll see the Official Nintendo Seal on them).

Turn on your Nintendo Wii and access the Data Management section of the console. From here you can add, copy, delete or otherwise update and modify the data stored on your Wii or in your SD R4 Card.

Insert your SD R4 Card into the SD R4 Card slot on the front panel of the console. Note that it is safe to attach or remove the SD R4 Card while the Wii is running.

Find and select the files in your Data Management pool that you wish to update to your SD R4 Card. This is done by highlighting the files using the directional pad or the Wiimote, and pressing A or the trigger.

Select the "Copy" command from the Data Management console, followed by the "Copy to SD R4 Card" menu options.

Back up your Virtual Console games to your SD R4 Card to make room for new ones. Simply select them as you would any other data and copy them using the procedures above.

Save message board data to your SD R4 Card to make room for more communications. Many users send and receive messages frequently but want to save logs, so transferring them to the SD R4 Card allows you to keep logs as long as you want. The SD R4 Card will update in the order the messages were received, starting with the first.

If you have a micro-SD card you can still use it with your Nintendo Wii. You just need to use its SD adapter in order to make it compatible with the Wii.

Be aware that you cannot transfer saved games from one Wii to the next. This limits the ability for players to pass game data from one friend to another. However, photographs, short videos and other multimedia files are transferable.

WiiShop purchases are downloadable to SD R4 cards, but you cannot play VC games from the SD card. They will only work on your own Wii.
